Sám nguyện is a Buddhist expression for repenting of past wrongdoing and making a vow to avoid repeating it and to cultivate better conduct; it can also name a repentance-and-vow text or practice.

`Sám nguyện` là cách nói trong Phật giáo, kết hợp `sám` với `nguyện`: nhìn lại lỗi lầm, thành tâm sám hối rồi phát nguyện không lặp lại và nuôi dưỡng việc lành (*repent and make a vow to reform; repentance-and-vow practice*). Từ cũng có thể đặt tên một bài đọc, bài hát hoặc thời thực tập sám hối–phát nguyện. Không rút gọn thành `kính sám hối` thiếu nghĩa; lớp `nguyện` phải được giữ. Sám nguyện không tự chứng minh lời nguyện đã được thực hiện, lỗi đã được tha, nghiệp quả đã hết hoặc mọi quan hệ đã hàn gắn. Trong lời Nam Bộ có thể giải `nhận lỗi rồi nguyện sửa`, `ăn năn và hứa với lòng sẽ làm khác`; không biến thành lời cầu xin đạt điều mong muốn.
