Sám lễ is an old Buddhist term for a repentance rite or for performing that rite; it does not mean baptism or Catholic last rites.

`Sám lễ` là từ Hán–Việt cũ `懺禮`, dùng trong Phật giáo để chỉ lễ sám hối hoặc việc hành lễ sám hối (*Buddhist repentance rite; perform a repentance rite*). Tùy văn cảnh, có thể hiểu gần `lễ sám`, `lạy sám`, `tụng sám`; nên nêu tên pháp sám cụ thể nếu biết. Không giải là `lễ rửa tội trước khi chết`: phép Rửa tội, Bí tích Hòa giải và nghi thức dành cho bệnh nhân trong Công giáo là những khái niệm khác. Sám lễ cũng không tự bảo đảm tiêu trừ hậu quả, được tha thứ, người bệnh qua đời an yên hoặc người sống đã thay đổi. Từ nay hiếm; trong lời Sài Gòn–Nam Bộ nên dùng `lễ sám hối ở chùa`, `lạy sám`, `tụng sám` cho rõ.
