Tiếng Anh tùy đối tượng là `exemption or reduction`, `waiver or reduction`, `relief`; không mặc định `discount`, vì thuế, học phí, lãi phạt và nghĩa vụ hành chính có cơ chế khác nhau. `Miễn giảm` không đồng nghĩa hoãn thời hạn, khoanh nợ, hoàn tiền hay xóa toàn bộ nghĩa vụ khác. Chỉ ghi hai thành tố Hán–Việt `免` và `減`, không tuyên bố một nguyên khối cổ `免減` khi nguồn chưa định vị.
