Tính từ láy có hai nét gần nhau: (1) đồ đạc gồm nhiều món lớn nhỏ, lộn xộn hoặc bất tiện khi mang, cất, sắp xếp: cluttered, encumbered with many things; (2) khẩu ngữ, công việc có nhiều khoản lặt vặt khiến phải loay hoay, chưa thể xong gọn: tied up with odds and ends. `Lỉnh kỉnh` không tự có nghĩa dơ bẩn, vô giá trị, quá nặng hay không thể hoàn thành.
