Chớ chi is an older regional expression, especially visible in Southern writing, meaning ‘if only’ or ‘had ... only’; it introduces a wished-for or counterfactual condition, often with regret.

`Chớ chi` là kết từ/phương thức biểu thị ước muốn trong lời vùng và văn cũ, tương ứng `giá như`, `ước gì`, `phải chi`. Cụm thường mở một mệnh đề nêu điều đã không xảy ra hoặc điều người nói mong khác đi; phần sau cho biết hệ quả được hình dung: `chớ chi biết trước thì...`, `chớ chi mà...`. Sắc thái thường là tiếc nuối, nhưng câu phải cho biết người nói tiếc việc gì; bản thân cụm không chứng minh ai có lỗi, điều ước còn làm được hay kết quả chắc chắn tốt hơn. Đây là một đơn vị toàn cụm, không phân tích thành lời cấm `chớ` cộng đại từ hỏi `chi`.
