To smear, smudge, or stain a surface, or to become smeared or marked when ink, paint, food, oil, dirt, or another substance spreads beyond its intended place. The word describes a visible result and does not by itself mean permanent damage, poor hygiene, carelessness, or deliberate vandalism.

Động từ/tính từ chỉ chất màu, mực, thức ăn, dầu, bùn… dây hoặc loang khỏi chỗ, làm bề mặt có vết nhòe/bẩn: smear, smudge, stain; cũng tả chính trạng thái đã bị dây (`trang giấy bị lem`). Cấu trúc phải làm rõ cái gì lem, chất gì gây lem và bề mặt nào bị dính; không dịch mọi trường hợp bằng `dirty`, vì mực có thể lem nhưng vật vẫn vệ sinh. Một vết lem không tự chứng minh hư vĩnh viễn, người làm cẩu thả, trẻ ở bẩn hay có ý phá; nhiều vết có thể lau hoặc sửa. Phân biệt `lấm` thiên về dính chất bẩn thành vết, `nhòe` thiên về nét mất rõ, còn `lem nhem`, `lấm lem`, `lem luốc` tăng mức hoặc mở rộng đánh giá. Nguồn Hán–Nôm hiện có chỉ gợi nhiều cách ghi theo âm/nghĩa; chưa đủ để nhận một chữ chuẩn nên tab để trống đã xác minh.
