Danh từ/động từ chỉ nước dâng hoặc tràn khỏi phạm vi thường có, làm một vùng bị ngập: flood, flooding, to be flooded. `Nước lụt`, `mùa lụt`, `bị lụt` không tự cho biết nguyên nhân, độ sâu, thiệt hại hay có phải lũ quét. Trong cách dùng vùng/cũ, `dao lụt`, `kéo lụt` nghĩa là lưỡi đã cùn, cắt không bén; đây không phải nghĩa 'bị ngập nước'. Chữ Nôm `𣹕` có chứng tích trực tiếp cuối thế kỷ XIX cho mục `lụt`; đó là cách ghi một từ Việt, không biến từ này thành Hán–Việt.
