Rau dừa can refer either to the aquatic edible plant Ludwigia adscendens or, in Southern ornamental usage, to the Madagascar periwinkle Catharanthus roseus; the two species must not be confused.

Rau dừa là tên dân gian có hai sở chỉ thực vật phải tách rõ. Rau dừa nước, thường rút thành rau dừa trong cảnh ruộng, đìa và bữa ăn miền Tây, là Ludwigia adscendens thuộc họ Onagraceae: cây thảo bò ở bùn hoặc nổi trên nước nhờ những rễ phao xốp trắng; ngọn non có nơi được hái làm rau. Trong cảnh sân vườn, bông trắng–hồng–đỏ và hàng kiểng, rau dừa hoặc bông rau dừa lại là cách gọi Nam Bộ của dừa cạn, Catharanthus roseus thuộc họ Apocynaceae. Hai loài không cùng họ và không thay nhau. Tên rau dừa không đủ để suy cây nào cũng ăn được, mọc ở nước sạch, có công dụng chữa bệnh, dùng thuốc an toàn hay xác định một cây ngoài thực địa; cần xem môi trường, hoa, lá, rễ và nguồn chuyên môn. Rau Dừa viết hoa còn có thể là địa danh, không phải một nét nghĩa thực vật mới.
