Rỉ means to seep or leak out slowly in tiny amounts; it also appears in expressions for rusting and for speaking very quietly into someone's ear.

`Rỉ` có ba lớp cần tách: (1) chất lỏng thấm hoặc chảy ra từng ít một qua khe/lỗ rất nhỏ: `vòi rỉ nước`, `vết thương rỉ máu`, `dầu rỉ ra` (*leak; seep; ooze* theo chất và cấu trúc); từ này chưa cho biết nguyên nhân, lưu lượng hay mức nguy hiểm; (2) trong `rỉ sét`, `han rỉ`, kim loại bị lớp sản phẩm ăn mòn bám hoặc biến đổi bề mặt (*rust; corrode*), thường gặp song song với chính tả `gỉ`, nhưng dấu rỉ không tự kết luận vật đã mất an toàn chịu lực; (3) khẩu ngữ nói rất nhỏ và riêng cho một người nghe: `rỉ tai`, `nói rỉ vào tai` (*whisper; say under one's breath*). Nói nhỏ không tự chứng minh nội dung là bí mật hay đúng. Phân biệt `rỉ` với `rĩ` trong `rầu rĩ`, `rỉa` lấy từng miếng nhỏ và `rịn` thấm ứa thành giọt nhỏ. Tab Nôm ghi `汜` cho `rỉ ra`, `釲` cho `rỉ sét`, `𠯇` cho `rỉ tai`, không trộn ba lớp.
