Rao means to announce or offer something publicly, especially by calling out or posting a notice; in Southern tài tử music, rao is an improvised opening passage that sets up the mode, pitch, and mood before the main piece.

`Rao` có hai lớp chính: (1) động từ làm cho nhiều người biết bằng lời gọi nơi công cộng hoặc bằng thông báo đăng công khai, thường gặp trong `rao hàng`, `rao bán`, `rao vặt` (*to call out; announce; advertise for sale*); (2) thuật ngữ đờn ca tài tử Nam Bộ chỉ đoạn/câu nhạc mở đầu ứng tác tự do trước khi vào bản, giúp thử và chỉnh dây, báo hơi–điệu, gợi cảm hứng và chuẩn bị người nghe (*improvised prelude in Southern Vietnamese tài tử music*). Rao bán chỉ là lời chào bán, không tự bảo đảm giá, nguồn gốc hay tình trạng món hàng. `Rao` trong âm nhạc không phải lời rao hàng và không phải một giai điệu cố định: câu rao phải hợp hơi–điệu và tương tác với bạn đờn, người ca. Phân biệt `rao` với `rào` ngăn chắn, `rão` giãn lỏng và `ráo` khô. Tab Nôm `咬` chỉ có dẫn chứng `rêu rao`, nên chỉ hỗ trợ họ nghĩa nói công khai, không gán cho thuật ngữ tài tử.
