Rền can describe a low, resonant sound continuing or recurring in waves; colloquially it can mark something lasting unusually long, and in traditional food language it describes well-cooked sticky rice or cakes with an even, cohesive texture.

`Rền` có ba lớp: (1) tả âm trầm, mạnh và vang vọng liên tục hoặc từng hồi: `sấm rền`, `trống rền`, `tiếng máy rền` (*rumbling; booming; reverberating*). Âm rền không tự cho biết máy hỏng, sắp mưa hay nguồn âm nguy hiểm; (2) khẩu ngữ chỉ hoạt động/trạng thái kéo dài liên tục, quá lâu hoặc quá nhiều so với thường: `mưa rền mấy ngày`, `đi chơi rền`, `chẵn rền` (*for days on end; continuously; repeatedly*), trong đó mức quá lâu là đánh giá theo hoàn cảnh; (3) tả xôi hoặc bánh nếp được nấu kỹ nên dẻo đều, kết dính và được đánh giá ngon: `xôi rền`, `bánh chưng rền`, có thể nói `bánh tét nấu rền` trong lời bếp (*evenly soft and glutinous; thoroughly cooked to a cohesive texture*). Độ rền không tự bảo đảm an toàn thực phẩm hay mọi thành phần đã chín. Tab Nôm `𡃚` chỉ ghi lớp `sấm rền`.
