Liền has four common uses: touching or continuing without a gap; occurring repeatedly without interruption; happening immediately; and becoming closed over as a wound heals. The surrounding noun or verb determines whether English needs adjacent, consecutive, straight, immediately, or heal over.

Không dùng một bản dịch cho mọi câu. Chữ `連`/`聯` được từ điển Hán–Nôm ghi làm chữ Nôm đọc `liền`; đó là chứng cứ cách ghi, không biến toàn bộ mục này thành âm Hán–Việt chuẩn — âm Hán–Việt của `連` là `liên`.
