Coi ý is an older and Southern Vietnamese expression meaning to gauge or read someone's feelings, attitude, wishes, or intentions from what they say and do, or to find out their preference before deciding. It describes observation or inquiry, not certain access to another person's mind.

`Coi ý` là nhìn lời nói, thái độ, phản ứng hay cách cư xử để đoán người khác đang nghĩ, muốn, thương ghét hoặc nghiêng về phía nào; cũng dùng trong `hỏi/dò/thử coi ý` khi muốn biết ý kiến hay lựa chọn của họ trước khi làm. Cụm rất thường trong văn Nam Bộ cũ và gần `xem ý`, `dò ý`, `thăm dò ý`, nhưng mức chủ động hỏi và mức suy đoán khác nhau theo câu. Không dịch máy móc là `look at an idea`; thường chọn `gauge`, `read`, `see what someone thinks/wants`, `sound someone out`. Kết luận từ `coi ý` vẫn là nhận định của người quan sát, không chứng minh ý nghĩ, cảm xúc, sự đồng thuận, lời hứa hay quyết định cuối cùng của người kia. `Ý` là thành tố Hán–Việt `意`; `coi` là động từ Việt, nên toàn cụm không phải khoản vay Hán văn nguyên khối.
