Several Vietnamese words share the spelling chao. The common food noun means fermented tofu preserved in a salty, aromatic liquid. A verb describes swaying, tilting, sweeping through the air, or briefly moving food through liquid. A separate noun means a lampshade. These meanings must be resolved from context and must not be assigned one invented etymology or character.

Mục đồng tự gồm nhiều lớp không được trộn: (1) chao là đậu hũ lên men, thường nằm trong nước có muối và gia vị, dùng làm món chấm, gia vị hay nguyên liệu; (2) động từ chao chỉ chuyển động nghiêng, đưa qua đưa lại hoặc lượn nhanh; (3) trong bếp, chao thức ăn qua nước hay chất lỏng là nhúng/đảo nhanh rồi lấy ra; (4) chao đèn là bộ phận che quanh bóng đèn để hướng hoặc làm dịu ánh sáng. Bản dịch phải theo nét: fermented tofu/fermented bean curd, sway/tilt/swoop, swish/rinse/blanch briefly, hoặc lampshade. Không lấy cách viết Quốc ngữ giống nhau làm bằng chứng cho một nguồn gốc Hán–Nôm chung.
