Rập is a pattern or template, especially a flat garment pattern used for cutting fabric; as a verb, it means to print, trace, or reproduce according to a model.

`Rập` là (1) bản/khuôn mẫu phẳng, đặc biệt trong may mặc, dùng để xác định hình dáng và kích thước chi tiết trước khi cắt vải (*pattern; template*): `bộ rập`, `rập cơ bản`, `thiết kế rập`; và (2) động từ `in, đồ hoặc phỏng theo đúng mẫu có sẵn` (*print/trace/reproduce from a pattern*): `rập kiểu`, `rập theo mẫu`. Một bộ rập không tự bảo đảm trang phục vừa người: còn phải xét số đo, độ co giãn, đường may và lần thử. `Rập theo` cũng không nhất thiết là sao chép trái phép; phải xem quyền sử dụng và mức biến đổi cụ thể. Phân biệt `rập` với `dập` dùng lực ép/đánh hoặc dập tắt, `ráp` lắp cho khớp, `rạp` nơi biểu diễn/cúi thấp và `rắp` toan định. Lời Sài Gòn–Nam Bộ trong xưởng may dùng tự nhiên `ra rập`, `sang rập`, `đặt rập lên vải`; đây là thuật ngữ nghề nghiệp, không phải nghĩa riêng của vùng. Tab Nôm ghi `𪮯` theo dẫn chứng `rập khuôn`, không gán cho mọi công cụ đồng âm.
