So quiet or faint—especially of speech—that the listener cannot hear the words clearly. It describes audible volume and clarity in a particular situation, not necessarily shyness, fear, guilt, deception, lack of confidence, or a medical condition.

Tính từ/trạng từ thường đi với `nói`, `giọng`, `trả lời`: âm thanh, nhất là lời nói, nhỏ và khẽ quá nên người nghe khó nghe rõ: speak in a tiny voice, speak barely audibly, mumble softly. Phải tách âm lượng quan sát được khỏi nguyên nhân: nói lí nhí không tự chứng minh người nói nhút nhát, sợ, có lỗi, nói dối, thiếu tự tin hay có bệnh.
