Giai điệu means melody: a sequence of musical sounds organized in pitch and rhythm and heard as a tune or musical line. A melody can be sung or played without lyrics. It is not the same thing as lyrics, harmony or a musical scale.

Phân biệt âm giai là hệ âm/bậc dùng làm chất liệu, lời ca là phần ngôn từ, còn hòa âm nói đến sự kết hợp các âm. Chưa xác nhận hồ sơ chữ gốc cho toàn từ trong lô này; lời nhân vật chơi chữ giai với hay không được nâng thành từ nguyên.
