To acknowledge that something is true, valid, valuable, or attributable to someone; also, for an authority to grant official recognition to a status, qualification, result, or entity. In colloquial speech, phải công nhận introduces a candid concession: admittedly or I have to say.

Động từ Hán–Việt có ba cách dùng chính: thừa nhận một sự thật hoặc đánh giá; ghi nhận giá trị, đóng góp hay quyền của ai; và xác lập chính thức một tư cách, kết quả hoặc văn bằng theo thẩm quyền. Trong khẩu ngữ, “phải công nhận…” mở đầu lời thừa nhận thật lòng, thường tương ứng admittedly hoặc I have to say.
