A distinctly southern Vietnamese exclamation used much like trời ơi or ‘oh my goodness’. Depending on tone and situation, it may express surprise, admiration, alarm, exasperation, disbelief, or sympathy. It reacts to the situation rather than naming an object, and is informal rather than obscene.

Thán từ đặc trưng trong lời Nam Bộ, gần “trời ơi”, dùng để bật ra phản ứng trước điều vừa thấy, nghe hoặc nhớ tới. Tùy ngữ điệu và câu sau, chèng ơi có thể biểu lộ bất ngờ, trầm trồ, lo, bực, không tin nổi hay xót xa; bản dịch phải chọn oh my goodness, goodness, wow, oh no hoặc một lời cảm thán tự nhiên theo tình huống. Đây là lời thân mật, không tục, nhưng dễ thiếu trang trọng trong văn bản hành chính hay nghi lễ. Không nên gán một cảm xúc cố định và không tự tạo từ nguyên Hán–Nôm cho tiếng cảm thán này.

The same exclamation can convey admiration or concern, so a translator must read what follows rather than always choosing wow.
