Cẩn here means to inlay: to fit decorative pieces into a prepared surface. Cẩn xà cừ describes mother-of-pearl inlay, often on wooden furniture. A bàn cẩn is an inlaid table. This verb is separate from cẩn in cẩn thận and from personal names.
